A server can be down for many reasons, they are explained here.

Following a modification

This is the most frequent problem.
You have made a modification and your server is offline.
Example :

  • Added plugin
  • Edited file
  • Deleted file
  • Added model
  • Edited start map

To get your server back online, change back your modifications or reinstall your gameserver.


Defective plugin

Plugins are usually developped by volunteer.

Several misconfigured plugins will crash the server.

Example: If a model is improperly installed with Mani admin plugin, server won't start.

Sometimes, Mani Admin Plugin crashes server for unexplained reasons. You can try to rename addons folder into "addons_old" then restart your gameserver.

  Reminder: a configuration can be obsolete and lead to crash your server even if you did not touch anything for months !


Corrupted file

In the course of time, or following a game bug, some files can be corrupted, which could lead gameserver problem.
Gameserver repair should fix this kind of problem.


Game bug

It may come that a game update has bugs, especially with Linux binary, because it isn't tested by Valve.

Example : for the game TeamFortress 2 : when the spy took the knife, server crashes.

Defective update

Rushed update or not tested by game editor may make server unusable.


Game authentification server problem

To provide gameservers list to players, it needs to be referred.
Problem on authentification server may prevent a gameserver to start or make it invisible on the server list.
